The not-for-profit business that I have chosen to research about is the NHS (National Health Service). The name NHS is used for each of the four public health services in the United Kingdom. They were established together in 1948 as one of the major social reforms. The NHS is a charitable company and their charitable aims are the ‘relief of sickness and the preservation and protection of public health’.

Purpose
The main purpose of the NHS is to provide healthcare for all British Citizens based on need and not the ability to pay. The NHS also seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of patients, communities and its staff through professionalism, innovation and excellence in care.

Sector
The NHS can be recognised as a primary, secondary and tertiary sector because the NHS is divided into primary care, secondary care and tertiary care. Primary care is often the first point of contact for people in need of healthcare, and they may be provided by professionals such as GPs, dentists and pharmacists. Secondary care (can be referred to as hospital and community care) can either be a planned care such as a cataract operation or it can be an urgent and emergency care such as a treatment for a fracture. Tertiary care refers to highly specialised treatment such as neurosurgery, transplants and secure forensic mental health services. The NHS is also one of the largest public sectors in the world.

Scope
The NHS is a publicly funded national healthcare system. It is a national organization because it has got the National health service in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Size
The NHS has been revealed to being the fifth largest organization with a high amount of employees working for it. If an organization is large it has to have over 250 workers, so this would mean that the NHS is a large business organization because it has got 1.7 million workers across four countries like England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

A.P2 Explain how the NHS is influenced by stakeholders.

Stakeholders are one of the most important people that a business needs for it to be a success. The NHS has got a lot of stakeholders and they have an affect on the business. Examples of stakeholders the NHS has are:
One of the most important stakeholder that the NHS has are the patients. The patients are those that attend the NHS for healthcare due to illnesses and diseases. If the NHS provides the patients with good quality services like curing a disease or illness or provides them with good quality subscribed products to take as medicine then the patients would be satisfied with the aid given and recommend the NHS to more people that the patient would know. This would then mean that the NHS would gain more support from the general public which means that when the NHS runs a charity event and collects donations to help people then they would gain more. Providing a good quality service to the patients is one of the key things for the NHS because the success of the business depends on it.
North West Healthcare Science Network – The NHS North West Healthcare Science Network is a professional network created in 2004 to support, promote, develop and represent the Healthcare Science workforce of over 7000 healthcare scientists in the North West. The NHS is developing even more because of the this stakeholder it has. This is a good thing for the NHS because if a successful business is developing even more then it would mean that they are trying to compete well with other businesses and stay on top. Another reason why development is good for the NHS is that it would allow the business to provide a better and good quality products and services for its customers.
Academic Health Science Networks- the Academic Health science Networks (AHSNs) present a unique opportunity to give support to education, clinical research, informatics, innovation, training and healthcare delivery. Their goal is to improve patient and population health outcomes by converting research into practice, and developing and planning integrated health care services. The NHS would be influenced in a good way by this stakeholder because they are providing support for important things that a business needs. An example of support that this stakeholder provides the NHS is clinical research. Clinical research is a branch of healthcare science that determines the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products and treatment regimens intended for human use. These may be used for prevention, treatment, diagnosis or for relieving symptoms of a disease. This is good for the NHS because if they are producing effective and good quality medications to relieve illnesses and disease which people are satisfied with then more people would choose the NHS over other medical organizations.
Employees are one of the most important stakeholders in a business organization. Most of the employees at the NHS are Doctors and nurses. These are the people that take care of patients by providing them with a good quality healthcare service. The Doctors are one of the main reasons why the NHS is a success because they provide a good quality services and products to their patients. An example of when a doctor is providing a good quality service is when they have done an operation and the patient’s illness or disease has cured. An example of when a doctor is providing a good quality service can be when they give subscriptions for medicines to take that are effective at taking care of the patients pain, illnesses or diseases. If the doctor’s provide a good quality service and products then it would mean that the patients would be satisfied and visit the NHS more often than other medical organizations. Another reason why people would go to the NHS than other businesses is because the doctor’s follow the rule of ‘service must come before profit’ which means that they would provide good quality services and products without any fees and this would satisfy most people.

Structure of the NHS
Looking at the organogram of the NHS you can see that it has a Hierarchical organisational structure because it has got levels of hierarchy and the most important person in the organization is Simon Stevens ( the Chief Executive).

What is the role of Simon Stevens?
Simon Stevens is the Accounting Officer of the NHS England. He is responsible to Parliament and the NHS England Board for the delivery of the NHS England Business plan and for providing leadership to NHS England to create the culture and conditions for health and care services and staff to deliver the highest standard of care. Another role of his is to ensure that valuable public resources are used effectively to get the best outcomes for individuals, communities and society for now and for future generations.

All these things that Simon Stevens does for the NHS shows that he has got a good leadership to support his business organization to make it a success. The second most important people in the organogram of the NHS are Director of the Chair and Chief Executive’s Office, National Director: Operations and Information, Director: Specialised Commissioning, National Director:Commissioning Strategy, Chief Financial Officer, National Medical Director, Chief Nursing Officer and the National Director: Transformation and Corporate Operations. All these people have an impact on the success of the NHS as a business. An example of this is the Chief Financial Officer because he has the role of keeping the finance and budget of the NHS stable. If he doesn’t manage the finance and budget of the NHS then it would mean that the business would be unsuccessful; if money is unbalanced then equipment for providing services for the patients would be poor in quality so less people would attend for healthcare which would mean that the business would face many financial and other problems.

The third main important people working for the NHS are people who are working under the Directors and Officers. They all have different roles to do in the same department. They all do different roles in order to keep the NHS running well and support it to make it better to provide better quality services and products.

Aims and Objectives of the NHS
The goal of the NHS is to be a world-leading orthopaedic hospital with the best patient care and staff experience in the NHS. The NHS’s five aims and objectives are:

Patient care:
To maintain clinical excellence and high quality care for patients.
Increasing capacity and productivity will enhance patient care, access to our services and support financial stability.
To reduce the length of stay for the patients.

Staff experience- to recruit, develop and retain highly skilled and engaged staff who embrace and deliver the Trust’s aims and values.

Infrastructure:
Buildings, equipment and digital systems
Develop Digital Strategy in support of the Trust’s aims and objectives
Meet in-year milestones for enabling projects for new Stanmore site.

Financial stability:
Maintain financial control and achieve agreed activity levels.
To increase income from non-NHS sources in line with strategic aims.
Develop more relationships and partnerships to help achieve Trust vision.

To further develop financially viable integrated clinical research activities and academic track record.

A.M1 Assess the relationship and communication with stakeholders of the NHS using independent research

There are many ways that the NHS communicates with their stakeholders. Below are a list of the Stakeholders of the NHS and information on what their relationship is with the NHS and how the NHS communicates with them:
Patients- the patients are the people that visit the NHS for a healthcare for their illnesses or diseases. The relationship between the patients and the NHS are that the patients are like customers. This is because they attend the NHS for a product or service. An example of the product can be a medicine allocated to them by the doctor and an example of a service can be an operation to cure a disease or illness. The NHS communicates with their stakeholders by adverts(See Appendix 5) . Strength of advertising is that advertising is a good way for the NHS to communicate with their patients because they have the ability to select where your ads will be shown, giving a better chance to reach the target audiences. A weakness of advertising is that it can cost a high amount of money for your advert to go on. Another way that the NHS communicates with the public is by their website. On their website they have got a lot of information which helps the people that go on it. A strength for communicating by a website is that it would have useful and relevant information and it is easy to navigate around. A weakness would be that the website can be outdated and it could have a confusing structure and navigation.
Employees- The relationship between the employees and the NHS are that they are workers who work for the NHS. An example of an employee that works for the NHS is a doctor. A way that the NHS communicates with their employees is by having a staff engagement. A strength with having a staff engagement is that they can communicate and find gaps where they need to improve which will allow them to provide a better goods and services for their customers. A weakness with meetings would be that the more staff attend the meeting the less productivity would occur at the business organization. This might lead to lower quality of goods and services being allocated to the patients at the NHS.
Partners- The NHS has got partners and the relationship between them is that they are there to support them when in need of help. An example of a partner that the NHS has is the Department of Health and Social Care. A way that the NHS communicates with the Department of Health and Social Care is by contacting them by the telephone. Strengths of contacting someone by the telephone is that communication through the telephone is very easy and available, anytime and anywhere you can connect to anyone if you have the number of your expected person. Weakness of contacting someone by the telephone is that voice can sometimes be not clear due to signal problems. This is bad for the NHS because if a very important conversation was taking place then when signal is lost it can lead to some problems.

Below are the lists of the aims and objectives of the NHS and how the organizational structure allows it to achieve its aims and objectives.

Patient care (To maintain clinical excellence and high quality care for patients.) – The NHS would achieve this because it has got a National medical Director who is there to continuously improve quality outcomes through clinical leadership and influence in the three domains of:
Preventing people from dying prematurely.
Enhancing quality of life for people with long-term conditions.
Supporting people to recover from illnesses, diseases and injuries.

Staff experience (to recruit, develop and retain highly skilled and engaged staff who embrace and deliver the Trust’s aims and values) – The NHS would achieve this because they have a Chief Executive who would staff to deliver the highest standard of care and ensure that valuable public resources are used effectively to get the best outcomes for individuals, communities and society for now and for future generations.

Infrastructure (Buildings, equipment and digital systems) – The NHS would achieve this because they have the Director of Organisational change and programme Delivery who would make changes to the organisation to improve it and make it more successful.

Financial stability (Maintain financial control and achieve agreed activity levels) – The NHS would achieve this because they have the Chief Financial Officer who has the role of providing a first class financial management service ensuring that the NHS is well advised and provided with excellent financial services at all times. The NHS Finance Department has got more groups which balances the finance which will support the business.

Research, innovation and education (To further develop financially viable integrated clinical research activities and academic track record) – The NHS would achieve this because they have the Director of Policy, Partnerships and innovation who provides policy, strategy and analytical leadership for major national programmes of work to transform the NHS.

The NHS is a successful business organization because:
They are a charitable company with a charitable aim which is to ‘relief of sickness and the preservation and protection of public health. The NHS has achieved this aim because they have doctors who provide a service to people with illnesses, injuries and diseases to prevent it and protect the public health. A business organization is successful if it achieves its aim and the NHS has which means that it can be considered a successful business organization.
It has got the purpose of providing healthcare and to improve the health and wellbeing of patients. This would mean that more people would support the NHS because it is trying to protect and save lives of the people.
It provides a free service to their patients. If a free service is being given then more people would visit the NHS for a support with their healthcare. If the quality of the service is high and more people use the NHS for their healthcare then the business would be a success for providing a high quality service meeting the patients needs.
It is a national healthcare service which means that it would gain support from a huge amount of the population from the countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
It is the fifth largest organization with a high amount of employees working for it. If it has a high amount of employees working for it then it would mean that the productivity would be high and fast which would mean that the patients satisfaction would be high due to less waiting time to be taken care of.
It has got stakeholders like North West Healthcare Science Network and Academic Health Science Network who are there to support the NHS which means when in need of help they can just turn to these stakeholders. Having support from other Networks make it a successful business because when facing problems they can be supported to overcome it.
It has got a large amount of employees who work for them. An example of one is doctor. If a doctor provides a good quality service and allocates good quality products then it would mean that the patients satisfaction would be high. If the patients satisfaction is high then it would mean that there is a high chance of them recommending the NHS to the people that they know for healthcare. This would make the NHS a successful business because if it provides healthcare for more people of the population then it would achieve its aim of preventing illnesses and diseases of the people.
The NHS has got a good leadership because the Chief Executive, Simon Stevens, provides a good business plan and leadership to the NHS England to create the culture and conditions for health and care services and staff to deliver the highest standard of care. This would make the business a success because if it has good leadership it would mean that the employees would work more harder with motivation which will increase the productivity of the business leading to a high satisfaction of the people that visit the NHS.
It is successful because it communicates well with its stakeholders. An example of this can be the communication between the NHS and its patients. A communication technique that the NHS uses is the advertising technique. This would mean that they would reach out far and wide for their target audience who are in need of support with their health.
The last reason why the NHS is a success is that it has got people working inside the organisation to achieve the business’ aims and objective. An example of this is the Chief Financial Officer who has the role of providing a first class financial management service ensuring that the NHS is well advised and provided with excellent financial services at all times and this would allow them to achieving their aim of having financial stability.

A.P1 Explain the features of Walmart

For-profit business
The for-profit business that I have chosen to research about is Walmart. Walmart is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets, discount department stores and grocery stores. The company was founded by Sam Walton in 1962 and it was formed into a legal corporation on the 31st october 1969.

Ownership and liability
Walmart is a public limited company which means that it has got a limited liability.

Purpose
The purpose of Walmart is to provide its consumers with goods and services at a low price so that they can save money and gain satisfaction. These have been shown by the mission statements of Sam Walton. His mission statement for the first Walmart was “The lowest prices anytime, anywhere.” The current mission statement for Walmart is “We save people money so they can live better.”

Sector
The sector that Walmart operates in is the Retail trade sector.

Scope
Walmart is an international business organization because it has got 11,703 stores worldwide.

Size
If an organization is large it has to have over 250 workers, so this would mean that Walmart is a large business organization because it has got 1.4 million employees working for it in the United states and it has got 2.3 million people working for it worldwide. Walmart is a successful business because it has a Total Revenue of $485,873,000 which is £352418263.09 (see appendix 4).

Stakeholders are one of the most important people that a business needs for it to be a success. Walmart has got a lot of stakeholders and they have an affect on the business. Examples of stakeholders Walmart has are:
Investors: Investors are mainly interested in profits which they gain if a business is earning a high profit and being successful. The investors of Walmart want Walmart to have more profit which would mean that there would be a higher dividends or earnings per share. The investors benefit from Walmart because Walmart has got low prices for its products which means that it would lead to higher profit. Walmart would be impacted in a positive way by their investors because their investors would provide them support, motivation and funding when in need of help. The investors would do all they can to support Walmart and make it a successful business because if walmart is successful then it would earn a high amount of profit which the investors would benefit from.
Customers: Customers are generally included as a stakeholder group in a business. Walmart’s customers are interested in low prices or the affordability of goods which have an acceptable quality. Walmart maintains its cost leadership generic strategy, which involves offering the lowest possible prices. Customers would have an influence towards Walmart in a positive way because if the business provides its customers high quality products and services then they would be satisfied and recommend the store for other people to do shopping. More public spending at Walmart would then mean that they would gain higher profit. Another way that customers have a positive impact on Walmart is that the customer can do surveys and tell what needs to improve and if the business do these improvements then they would be even more successful than before.
Employees: Walmart’s employees are a significant consideration in the company’s managerial decision-making. Employees have got two main interests which are job security and higher wages. Employees are very important to Walmart and can affect them in a positive and a negative way. If an employee has good work ethics they would be high in punctuality and attendance and they would provide a good quality service to their customers which would make the business a success because of high customer satisfaction. If an employee has bad work ethics they would do all the things opposite to an employee with a good work ethics and this would mean that the customer satisfaction would be low and the business might be unsuccessful. Walmart is currently a successful business organisation which shows that its employees have got a good work ethics.
Suppliers: Suppliers are interested in getting more of their products sold at Walmart stores in a profitable way. This involves not just the selling of the suppliers’ products, but also the selling of these products at acceptably profitable prices. The supplier of Walmart can affect the business in a positive and a negative way. A supplier can affect Walmart in a positive way if they provide good quality products. Good quality products would mean that there would be more consumer satisfaction and this would mean that the profit of Walmart would increase due to a high demand for its good quality products. The supplier of Walmart can affect the business in a negative way if they provide poor quality products to the business. Poor quality products would mean that there would be less consumer satisfaction leading to low demand for the products and this can lead to a decrease in profit. Walmart has got high demands for its products which shows that the supplier is providing good quality products.

Looking at the organogram of Walmart you can see that it has a Hierarchical organizational structure because it has got levels of hierarchy. The most important people in the organogram are the above store managers. The above store managers do not really visit the stores everyday, but they look after the overall progress of multiple stores. They take care of the accounts, statistics and supply by overlooking the reports given to them by their juniors. The next important people on the organogram are the In-store Managers and they are responsible for managing an entire store. The third and last important people in the organogram are the In-Store Hourly workers and they are the staff you see most of the times working on floor, instead of the admin department.

Aims and Objectives of Walmart
Walmart’s aims and objectives are:
“Saving people money so they can live better”. This is their Missionary statement.
“To be the best retailer in the hearts and minds of consumers and employees.” This is their Vision Statement.
To achieve a top position in the retail industry.

There are many ways that Walmart communicates with their stakeholder. Below are a list of the stakeholders of Walmart and information on what their relationship is with Walmart and how Walmart communicates with them:
Consumers- They are one of the most important people for the business. The relationship between Walmart and its consumers is that the consumers are the people who visit Walmart to shop for goods and services. They are important because they provide the business money to make a profit. One of the main ways that Walmart communicates with their consumers is by advertising. A strength of advertising about your business to the general public is that it would reach far for your target audience in different locations in the world. Another strength of advertising is that you can persuade the target market to shop at Walmart which means more public spending and this would mean high amount of profit.
Employees- The relationship between employees and Walmart are that they are workers who work for the business in order to gain profit and make the business a success. One of the ways that Walmart has communication between its employees and employers is by having meetings. A strength of having meetings is that it motivates the employees and employers to work harder with motivation and it provides information so everyone would know what is going on. A weakness of having meetings is that Some work-team meetings are just a time drain for team members as they reduce the productivity of highly motivated workers, according to organizational and science psychology professor Steven G. Rogelberg at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.
Partners- Walmart has got partners and the relationship between them is that they are to provide support when each of them are in need of help. An example of a partner that Walmart operates with is Asda. One of the ways that Walmart communicates with Asda is by contacting them on the Phone. Strengths of communicating from the phone is that you can tell the person you phoned everything in a short period of time and it is much faster to get in contact. Weakness of communicating from the phone is that sometimes you can face signal loss and the phone’s battery can run out because a phone doesn’t work 24/7 without charging.

Below are the lists of the aims and objectives of Walmart and how the organizational structure allows it to achieve its aims and objectives

“Saving people money so they can live better”.

The organizational structure of Walmart would allow it to achieve this objective because it has got In-store hourly workers who are there to provide the consumers with goods and services at a low price. This would satisfy the consumers because they will be aware of the fact that they are getting their products better for value compared to the other stores and this would make the consumers lives much better. This shows that they are very close to achieving their aim and objective of allowing their consumers to save money and have a better live to live.

“To be the best retailer in the hearts and minds of consumers and employees.”

All of the people from the organizational structure allow the business to achieve this objective. This is because they all provide a high quality service and products to satisfy their consumers and get a space in their hearts and minds as the best retailer. This would be the best retailer in the employees hearts and minds because they would like their workplace because of how much success the business is and how much profit the business makes. They have achieved this aim and objective because they already have a space in their consumers hearts and minds due to the good quality products and services they provide.

To achieve a top position in the retail industry.

The in-store hourly workers would make the business to achieve this objective because they provide a good quality service and products to their consumers to satisfy them and meet their needs. This would allow Walmart to be a success and rise to one of the top places in the retail industry. The in-store managers make the business rise to being one of the top in the retail industry because they manage the accounts which means that they would be financially stable. This would mean that Walmart would have the advantage in a financial crisis compared to a business that is financially unstable.

Walmart is a successful business organization because:
It provides its consumers with high quality goods and services at a low price. This would mean that there would be high demand for the business’s products so public spending would increase which means that the profit would be really high.
It has achieved its aim and objective of giving satisfaction to its consumers. A business is successful if it achieves its aim and objective and Walmart has achieved one of its three objectives which makes it a successful business organization.
It is an international business with 11,703 stores worldwide. This allows it to be a successful business because if it provides good quality services and products worldwide then it would mean that it would gain a really high amount of profit overall. Having high profit is good for a business because it allows the business to spend money on other important expenses.
It has got about 2.3 million people working for it worldwide which would mean that the productivity would be quicker and this would lead to a better consumer satisfaction.
It has got investors to support it when in need of help. The investors provide it with motivation which would increase the productivity of the employees and employers. The investors also provide the business with advice which can help the business with having improvements to make it more of a success.
It has got employees with good work ethics which would mean that they would provide a good quality service and products to their consumers. If the employees have a good work ethics then it would mean that they are hard working and motivated which means productivity in the business would be high allowing it to be a success.
They have got suppliers who provide a good quality products to the business. Having good quality products would mean that there would be a high demand for it, so public spending would increase and the profit of Walmart would increase leading the business to a success.
It has got In-Store-Managers who manages the business’s finance. Being financially stable would mean that the business would be able compete well with its competitors and even take advantage of their rival if their rival are financially unstable.
The business communicates well with its consumers. An example of way that it communicates with its consumers is by advertising. This would allow the business to gain more consumers due to the persuasion of the adverts that reach far for the target audience.Having more consumers would mean that the profit would increase leading the business to a success.
Above store Managers allow the business to be a success because they motivate the employees which means that the productivity of the business would increase and this would lead the business to a success.

Conclusion
In this report I have been investigating two different businesses which are for- profit businesses and not-for-profit businesses. The for-profit business that I have investigated is Walmart and the not-for-profit business that I have investigated is the NHS. Throughout my investigation I have found out that a business is successful if it has got a high amount of employees with good work ethics, communicates well with their stakeholders, and have people working in the organisation who have the main purpose of achieving the organization’s aims and objectives.
