Many college students binge drink alcohol to relax and socialise, not knowing that it can have long term and short term health effects. Binge drinking can have adverse social and economic effects on the drinker, the immediate environment and society as a whole. Indeed, other people beside the drinker can be affected, for example, by rape or violence. It has a huge impact on the society as in respect to resources required for criminal system, health care and other social institutions.
The repercussions of binge drinking by college students are more significant, more destructive, and more costly than many realize, having never been much into drinking myself, I did not realize how these consequences could affect students whether or not they drink. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which conducts the annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), defines binge drinking as 5 or more alcoholic drinks for males or 4 or more alcoholic drinks for females in one day. Upon doing future research on the effects it has on a college students health really scares me,Through learning the realities of alcohol, I realized you don’t have to binge drink like it’s a competition to have fun, yes it’s fun to drink and socialize, however a few years into college the brain will start showing signs of memory loss, making one fail at their subjects, leading to a increase chance of dropping out. College students between the ages of 18 and 26 die from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, like alcohol poisoning, firearm misuse, unsafe sex, and violence. Students between the ages of 18 and 21 are assaulted by other student who have been binge drinking . Female’s between the ages of 18 and 22 reported having alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape.
I don’t mean just the physical repercussions that accompany drinking too much alcohol, like a bad hangover. Alongside the physical health issues, binge drinking can cause serious mental health problems. Alcohol can be part of a healthy lifestyle by drinking in moderation and you must also exercise and eat a regular diet.
